Swing weight calculator

See exactly what lead tape does to your paddle before you stick any on. Pick a paddle, choose a placement, and the calculator works out the change in swing weight, static weight and balance point.

What's exact here and what isn't

The swing weight change is exact physics — adding mass m at radius r from the swing axis changes the moment of inertia by m × r². No calibration or assumption is involved, so this number is right.

The stock baseline it's measured against is an estimate from the manufacturer's published dimensions and weight. If you know your paddle's actual measured swing weight, add the change above to that figure instead.

Practical notes on lead tape

  • ·Add in small increments. 2–4 g changes how a paddle plays more than most people expect.
  • ·Symmetry matters. Weight at 3 o'clock without matching weight at 9 will twist the paddle in your hand.
  • ·Adding tip weight and then counterbalancing in the handle raises stability while keeping the balance point where you like it — at the cost of overall weight.
  • ·Check tournament rules before modifying a paddle you compete with. Alterations can affect approved-equipment status.

Swing weight, explained

What is swing weight on a pickleball paddle?
Swing weight measures how heavy a paddle feels through the swing, based on how its mass is distributed rather than what a scale reads. It's a moment of inertia about an axis near your hand, so mass in the head counts far more than mass in the handle. Two paddles at the same 8.0 oz can feel completely different.
How much does lead tape change swing weight?
It depends entirely on where you put it. The effect scales with the square of the distance from the swing axis, so a gram at the tip does roughly four times as much as a gram at the throat. That's why the same 4 g feels dramatically different at 12 o'clock versus in the handle.
Where should I put lead tape on a pickleball paddle?
3 and 9 o'clock is the usual starting point — it adds stability and twist weight with a moderate swing-weight increase. Move higher up the face for more power and plough-through, or add to the handle to counterbalance if the paddle starts feeling sluggish.
Does adding lead tape affect USAP approval?
Modifying a paddle can affect its approved-equipment status for sanctioned play. Check current USA Pickleball equipment rules and your tournament's requirements before playing competitively with a modified paddle.
